What is Form I-90?

The Department of Homeland Security — U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Form I-90, or officially the Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card, is the document used by lawful permanent residents and permanent residents in commuter status to apply for replacement or renewal of existing Permanent Resident Cards or also referred to green cards.

Green card holders should use Form I-90 if their green card is expired, near expiration, or has been lost, stolen, damaged, or destroyed.

While Form I-90 is used to renew or replace a green card, not everyone can use it. In general, permanent residents whose 10-year green cards will be expiring in the next six months, have expired, or have been lost, stolen, damaged, or destroyed can use the form. However, those with conditional green cards — green cards that expire two years after issuance, should follow a different process to replace theirs with a permanent green card that is valid for 10 years.

To convert a conditional green card to a permanent green card, an individual must file Form I-751, or Petition to Remove Conditions on Residence. For those who possess a green card based on a conditional marriage or by investing in a U.S.-based business entity, the same form should be used.

Supporting documents should be submitted along with your Form I-90 for verification. The required supporting documents depend on the reason for the application.

• If your green card has expired, is nearing expiration, or you need to update an older version of a green card or your green card has an error, or you have a green card before turning 14 and it will not expire until turning 16, submit your green card or outdated green card.
• If your green card was lost, stolen, or damaged, submit your green card or photocopies of green card, and a government-issued identification card that displays your photo, signature, name, and date of birth.
• If you never received your green card, but it was issued by the USCIS, submit a government-issued identification card that displays your photo, signature, name, and date of birth, Form I-797 or Notice of Action, and passport page with the stamp of I-551.
• If your name or personal information has legally changed and you need to update the information shown on your green card, submit your green card, legal documents such as marriage certificate, divorce papers, birth certificate, adoption papers, and other court-issued documents.
• If you are a commuter and travel from Mexico or Canada to the U.S. on a regular basis, submit your green card, and employment evidence and statement of at least the past six months.
• If you were a past commuter and now reside in the U.S., submit your green card, proof of U.S. residency, utility bills, and past employment details.
• If your immigration status was automatically converted to a green card holder, submit identification cards showing your photo, signature, name, and date of birth, evidence of temporary-residence status — Form I-797 or Form I-700.
